I was in NYC this past Monday as I have been for the past 2 1/2 years or so. I try to make my visits as interesting as possible. I have a friend at work who enjoys Art Deco architecture as much as I do and has made me more aware of it too. So when I head to SK, I have been passing by the Fuller Building which in on 41 East 57th St. and was built during 1928-1929. This past Monday I decided to go in a get a better look. I walked in from the 57th St entrance and immediately saw the mosaic on the floor (see picture left) I didn't know that it was the first steel structure ever built. I took a picture of the floor mosaic and right away I was yelled at by a security guard and told that I am not allowed to take pictures (fucking terrorists). The rest of the inside had the most incredible ornate metal doors on the elevators along with very ornate edging on the ceilings. I wanted to take so many pictures but I guess those days of taking pictures in Manhattan are over. the great thing about NYC is that almost every street has interesting buildings on it. Whether it's a fancy entranceway, gargoyles on the sides, or wrought iron metalwork they are all fantastic if you take the time to look. This little excerpt below is from an article I found on the web.
Completed for the Fuller Construction Co., the leading construction firm of the early 20th Century. The Fuller Company previously occupied the Flatiron Building.- The lobby has mosaic floors with ornamental and decorative themes similar to the building logo medallion.
- The lower 12 floors of the building were designed especially for art galleries with their high ceilings.
- The top of the tower is built in high Art Deco style with zigzags, stars, and sun-like patterns.

Time to start the letter writting...
We are home, the drive back sucked. It took over 7 hours. I will say that it was great to vacation with everyone. It had been about 9 years since I took a family vacation. I was in the middle of a job transition, then I was working as a temp so vacations were not easily had. since I was put on staff it has become possible again but for the past 3 summers I've been dealing with the cancer so that put a crimp in things. Now, while I'm still doing the chemo stuff, I decided I need a break so I took this vacation. As great as vacations are, it is always nice to get home.
PS: I wrote the letter (email) and sent it out...
we wait........

My Camera is Down and Out
Well today, we went to Woods Hole on the Cape to take a boat ride to see some of the sea creatures around Cape Cod. First off, it can take hours to get anywhere here. this is typical of most vacation destinations and we alloted extra travel time to go to Woods Hole. Needless to say, we didn't get there in time for the 2 o'clock excursion. We had to park outside of Falmouth and take the 'trolley' to town. We noticed on our trip there (and the trip back) that the prerequiste for being a trolley bus driver is that you must dislike people and be unfriendly and unhelpful. We finally got to our destination (late) and booked the 4 o'clock trip. The lady there was very helpful and loved her job. We did get to see a very cool aquarium in town while we waited. It was free and very kid oriented. We all had a blast. So we finally get ready to board the boat to take up out. The people were split up into 3 groups. One rode in the bow, one in the stern and one up top. After about 30 minutes we switched areas and performed different tasks and learned about different sea creatures. We got to ride in the bow first. I should have seen it coming but I didn't. While riding out of the harbor, several large waves came over the bow and drenched us. Not splashed us, DRENCHED US. I had my video camera out plus my digital still camera and they both got soaked. Neither of them worked. I think the video MAY be ok but so far the still camera is ont working at all. I did tell them when we were getting off what happened and it was an uncomfortable situation. I'm not looking to make a big deal out of it but I wanted them to know about it and hopefully both will be working and that will be that. They could have said before it happened that there was a chance of a wave coming over, but afterwards it was said that it happens often. If I had known, I would have waited to take pictures. Anyway, we all had a great time and the kids got to participate in experiments and taking water samples and other fun things. It was well worth it but I hope my camera is better tomorrow...

Greetings from Cape Cod MA
We just got up to Cape Cod today. The drive up was great, no traffic. Our house is so cool. I'll take more photos of it for sure. It's even got a little loft that the boys are digging. The weather is so-so today but it's supposed to get better. But you know what? I'm on vacation and I don't really care. Obviously I'm not on vacation from blogging. I have the laptop but I can only get dialup, no wireless from the house but I'm sure I can find some in town. But you know what? I really don't care about that either. I posted some photos on Flicker if anyone is interested. See the right sidebar for the images. |
